Following the death of Richard Fitzhugh of Oak Hill in 1821, six slaves were identified by name in his will and estate account report.

  1. In his will: “I give to my beloved wife Susannah Fitzhugh … my negro Abraham”1
  2. In the executors’ report of his estate account: “Dec 1821 By cash recd. from the sale of Slaves viz: for Henry & Sumner $675” and “Feby 1822….for Sam, George & Julius $1000”2

When Richard’s widow Susannah died in 1856, their son and executor David Fitzhugh prepared an inventory of the personal property in the estate. Included was a list by first name and value of 41 slaves.3
