Parcel 1.1.7

Parcel 1.1.7

Chain of Ownership and Division

Giles Fitzhugh inherited this parcel following the death of his father, Henry Fitzhugh (Colonel), in 1783. In 1796, he and his brother Battaile Fitzhugh sold/exchanged their Ravensworth lands with Battaile receiving this parcel and giving Giles part of Parcel 1.1.1.

It is Lot 7 of seven lots created by deed A2:186 in the division of parcel 1.1 (Ravensworth North) among Battaile, Giles and three more brothers The exchange included Battaile selling 141 acres (Parcel 1.1.7.1) to Nicholas Fitzhugh, who merged it with Parcel 1.1.6.

Unlike his brothers who settled on and worked their Ravensworth tracts, Battaile quickly sold the residual land in this parcel (1332 acres) and Parcel 1.1.1 in 1797 to doctors Henry Rose and Augustine Smith. They became the second Ravensworth owners outside the Fitzhugh family, after Colonel William Payne.

Division of Parcel 1.1.7

Parcel 1.1.7.1 was merged by Nicholas Fitzhugh with Parcel 1.1.6.

Seeking to turn a quick profit, Rose and Smith sold all but 100 acres of their land within the next year:

  1. Parcel 1.1.7.2, 202 acres, sold to Joseph Smith in November 1797.
  2. Parcel 1.1.7.3, 1000 acres, sold to Richard Ratcliffe in October 1798.
  3. Parcel 1.1.7.4, 100 acres, unsold residual, which they jointly retained.
